Here’s What You’ll Need

175g unsalted butter

175g caster sugar

3 medium eggs

135g self-raising flour

40g cocoa powder

1 tbsp milk

250g unsalted butter (softened)

500g icing sugar

1 tsp Vanilla extract

Cake Décor Yellow gel colour

Cake Décor Edible Eyes

Cake Décor Writing icing tubes

Here's What You'll Do:
  1. Preheat oven to 170ºC/160 ºC and line a 12-hole cupcake tray with cupcake cases.
  2. Cream together the unsalted butter/ baking spread and caster sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Add in eggs, self-raising flour and cocoa powder and beat.
  4. If your mixture is too thick you can add in 1 tbsp milk. Add a little bit at a time.
  5. Scoop the mixture evenly into the cupcake cases and bake in the oven for c. 20 minutes or until cooked through. (Springy to touch or a skewer comes out clean.)
  6. Leave the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
  1. While allowing the cupcakes to cool prepare the buttercream.
  2. Beat together softened unsalted butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract and a small amount of yellow colour gel and beat again. Add more yellow colour gel until you have achieved the colour you would like for the chick.
  4. Prepare a piping bag with a round nozzle and add your yellow buttercream.
  5. To create your chick cupcake, hold your piping bag straight above the center of your cupcake and pipe on a large blob as the chick’s body, making sure you leave some space in front of the chick to add writing icing feet.
  6. Once you have piped the body, again holding the piping bag directly above the center of the cupcake, pipe on a smaller blob on top of the body to create a head.  Repeat this for all cupcakes.
  7. Once you have piped all the chicks you can now add on your Edible Eyes. Stick two eyes to the faces of the chicks by pushing them gently into the buttercream.
  8. To finish off the chicks, use an orange writing icing tube to add a small orange beak to the face of the chick and two claws to the sponge on the front of the chick.
  9. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes until you have 12 decorated chicks.
